ABOUT UNIVERSITY

The University of New South Wales (UNSW), founded in 1949, is a public research university located in Sydney, Australia, with its main campus in Kensington and other locations in Paddington, Randwick, Coogee, and Canberra. A founding member of the Group of Eight and Universitas 21, UNSW offers a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees across seven faculties. Its origins trace back to the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts (1833) and Sydney Technical College (1878), evolving from a focus on technology and engineering to a comprehensive university by the late 20th century. The university began as the New South Wales University of Technology, reflecting post-WWII needs for technological expertise, and was renamed UNSW in 1958. Early courses integrated practical industry experience and humanities instruction, a forward-thinking approach for its time. The campus at Kensington began development in the 1950s, with rapid growth under leaders like Philip Baxter and Rupert Myers. UNSW played a role in founding the universities of Newcastle and Wollongong and expanded its academic portfolio in arts, medicine, and law. It has continued investing in research, including opening the Lowy Cancer Research Centre in 2010 and launching Mentem to support workforce upskilling in 2021.
