COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Teaching (Secondary) requires students to complete 96 credit points, including at least 48 credit points at the 500 level and 60 days of embedded professional experience in approved teaching areas. Students must attempt the National Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students within their first year of full-time study or equivalent and must pass it before undertaking the final placement, during which they also complete the Graduate Teacher Performance Assessment. The program includes 54 credit points of compulsory teaching units covering topics such as Aboriginal education, literacies and numeracies, inclusive teaching, digital technologies, cultural diversity, classroom management and three professional experience blocks totalling 60 days. In addition, students complete curriculum units linked to their approved teaching areas, with a minimum of 24 credit points required, although specific variations apply for teaching areas such as Information Processes and Technology, Software Design and Development, and combinations of History or Science disciplines. Students may take up to three HSIE teaching areas, with corresponding curriculum requirements. A further 6 to 24 credit points of elective education units are required, depending on the number of teaching areas being pursued, and electives include subjects on technology, linguistics, learning theory, STEM, behaviour support, inclusive education and an optional additional professional experience unit. Students undertaking more than two teaching areas are encouraged to complete the additional placement unit to help meet placement requirements across all areas. All candidates must successfully meet mandatory literacy, numeracy and performance assessment requirements before graduating.
