COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Scientific Studies at UNE requires candidates to complete a structured program of 96 credit points, with a focus on advanced-level study. Students begin with a 6-credit-point core unit, Research Methods in the Sciences (SCI500), which provides essential research skills and methodology applicable across scientific disciplines. Following this, candidates choose between the Research Pathway, allowing them to undertake a major research project and thesis, or the Capstone Experience, which emphasizes applied learning and integration of knowledge in practical contexts. Students then select one approved major from a range of specializations including Biochemistry, Biomedical Science, Botany, Chemistry, Genetics, Mathematics, Medicinal Chemistry, Quantitative Ecology, Statistics, or Zoology, providing depth in their chosen field. In addition, students may complete 0 to 12 credit points of elective units, which can be selected from any unit offered by UNE, including those within the chosen major, subject to prerequisites and timetabling. The course is designed to ensure that at least 36 credit points are completed at the 500-level, with no more than 12 credit points at 100-level, fostering advanced knowledge, research capability, and critical thinking. This flexible structure allows candidates to tailor their learning according to career goals, research interests, and professional development needs, while meeting rigorous academic standards.
