COURSE CURRICULUM

The Graduate Diploma of Data Science at UNE is structured to provide students with a comprehensive foundation in data science principles and practical applications. To qualify for the award, students must complete 48 credit points, including a minimum of 24 credit points at 400-level or above. The program is divided into core units and listed units, providing both essential skills and opportunities to specialise in advanced topics. The core units, totaling 24 credit points, include Introduction to Programming and the UNIX Environment, Database Management Systems, Introduction to Statistical Modelling, and Statistical Modelling and Experimental Design. These units provide the essential knowledge of programming, database management, and statistical techniques required for data analysis and computational problem solving. The remaining 24 credit points are chosen from a broad range of listed units, with at least 18 credit points at 400-level or above. These units allow students to tailor their studies to specific areas of interest, such as advanced computing, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data structures, operating systems, web programming, and bioinformatics. Additional options include spatial analysis, GIS, precision agriculture, healthcare information management, scientific programming, and advanced statistical techniques. Students may also undertake a Science Research Project to gain hands-on experience in applying data science methods to real-world problems. This flexible structure ensures that graduates develop both the theoretical understanding and practical skills necessary to analyse and manage large and complex data sets, solve challenging problems, and contribute effectively to data-driven decision-making across diverse industries. By completing the program, students are well-prepared to pursue advanced roles in data science, analytics, or related fields, or to continue their studies in the Master of Data Science, building on the knowledge and skills acquired in the graduate diploma.
