COURSE CURRICULUM

The Graduate Certificate in Environmental Science with a focus on the Spatial Landscape Assessment major at UNE is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in environmental science, preparing them to respond to current and future challenges in a rapidly changing world. The course is structured to accommodate different student backgrounds, with admission rules determining the specific requirements for unit completion and credit levels. Students admitted under Rule A are required to complete 48 credit points, with no more than 12 credit points at 100-level, no more than 12 credit points at 200-level, and at least 18 credit points at 400-level or above. As part of the course work, these students must complete the Spatial Landscape Assessment unit, ensuring that they gain the necessary technical skills and knowledge to analyse and assess environmental landscapes effectively. Those admitted under Rule B also complete 48 credit points, but they must have completed a unit in Introduction to Spatial Science and are required to have at least 18 credit points at 400-level or above. Rule B students may also receive advanced standing for prior studies, which allows them to tailor their program to suit their previous experience and accelerate their learning path. The program provides flexibility in unit selection while maintaining rigorous academic standards to ensure graduates develop expertise in environmental analysis, management, and sustainability practices. Units are designed to develop practical and research skills through a combination of online learning, intensive schools, and hands-on experiences. By completing the Graduate Certificate, students gain the knowledge and abilities to interpret environmental data, evaluate spatial patterns, and contribute to effective management strategies in a variety of professional settings. The course also provides pathways to further study, including the Master of Environmental Science and Management, and prepares students to engage with real-world environmental challenges, equipping them with both technical skills and critical thinking abilities.
