COURSE CURRICULUM

The Diploma in Legal Studies at UNE is structured to provide students with a comprehensive foundation in law, combining core legal knowledge with the flexibility to explore specialized areas. To qualify for the award, students must complete a total of 48 credit points, with 36 credit points from core units and 12 credit points from listed elective units. The core units introduce students to essential concepts in law and legal practice, including Foundations of Law, Law in Context, Legal Professional Skills, Introduction to Business Law, Introduction to Procedure Law, and Introduction to Legal Studies. These units equip students with the fundamental skills required to understand legal systems, processes, and professional practice. In addition to core units, students select 12 credit points from a range of listed units that allow them to broaden their legal knowledge in areas such as Alternative Dispute Resolution, Law and First Peoples of Australia, World Legal Systems, International Law, Language and the Law, Fundamentals of Evidence Law, Principles of Corporation Law, and Critical Thinking. With the permission of the course coordinator, students may also choose alternative units, provided they meet overall course requirements. This flexible structure ensures that graduates gain both a solid grounding in essential legal principles and the ability to tailor their studies to specific interests or career goals. The program is suitable for students seeking to enhance their legal knowledge for professional development, pursue careers in paralegal or legal support roles, or continue on to further study in law.
