COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Zoology at UNE is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of animal life, from microscopic parasites to large mammals, across a wide range of habitats. The course combines theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory and fieldwork experiences, enabling students to develop the skills required to think and act like a researcher in zoology. Students undertake the core program Zoology in Practice each year, which supports learning and development while providing hands-on opportunities in diverse field settings. Core units cover fundamental topics such as cell biology, the diversity of life, vertebrate and invertebrate zoology, entomology, animal behavior, physiology, and evolutionary parasitology, alongside quantitative methods relevant to environmental and rural sciences. These units ensure that students graduate with a strong foundation in scientific principles and zoological knowledge. Students are also required to complete a major, choosing from Animal Ecology, Applied Zoology, Natural History, or Palaeobiology, allowing for in-depth study in a specific area of interest. Additionally, students complete a minor or elective units totaling twenty-four credit points, which may include subjects such as Science Communication, Museum Studies, Water Science, Botany, Spatial Science, and Zoological Methods, providing flexibility to tailor the degree to individual career goals. The course emphasizes compliance with credit point requirements, ensuring that students complete at least thirty-six credit points at the three hundred level, not more than sixty-two at the one hundred level, and no more than twelve at the four hundred level. UNE’s unique research-led approach, combined with access to state-of-the-art facilities, local and international fieldwork opportunities, and expert academic staff, prepares students for careers in areas including conservation biology, wildlife ecology, molecular biology, animal physiology, and environmental management. By integrating theoretical knowledge with practical skills and offering opportunities for independent research, the Bachelor of Zoology equips graduates with the expertise and adaptability required to respond to the challenges of modern scientific and environmental work.
