COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Rural Science is a comprehensive 192-credit-point program designed to develop advanced scientific and practical skills for careers across the agricultural and environmental sectors. To qualify for the award, students must complete no more than 60 credit points at 100 level and at least 72 credit points at 300 or 400 level, ensuring strong progression into advanced study. Students aiming to graduate with Honours must complete 192 credit points including at least 36 credit points at 300 level and 36 credit points at 400 level or above, including the required unit RUSC490, with a maximum of 12 credit points at 500 level. The core structure consists of 150 credit points drawn from key rural science disciplines. Students build knowledge in plant science through units such as Agricultural Plants: Adaptation and Physiology, Plant Protection, Crop Production and Sustainable Agricultural Systems. Animal science is developed through Animal Production Systems and Products, Animal Health and Reproduction, Animal Physiology and Advanced Animal Nutrition. Foundational learning is supported by biology, chemistry, microbiology, genetics, soil science and quantitative methods, with units like Introduction to Biology, Chemistry I and II, Introductory Genetics, Soil Science and Biochemistry and Microbiology for Rural Science. Practical decision-making and research capability are strengthened through units such as Decision Making Skills for Agricultural Consultants and Applied Research Skills in Environmental and Rural Science. All students complete a core capstone unit, Problem Solving in Farm Systems, along with 16 weeks of approved practical experience to consolidate professional skills. Students may also undertake minors or Honours pathways depending on their interests and academic goals. The program blends scientific theory, hands-on practice and industry-relevant training to prepare graduates for diverse careers in modern agriculture.
