COURSE CURRICULUM

The course structure for the Bachelor of Music with Honours requires students to complete a single 48-credit-point unit that combines advanced coursework with major research or creative output. To qualify for the award, candidates undertake intensive study in music research methods, which includes a minor project tailored to their specific musical interests. Alongside this, students must complete either a dissertation on a chosen music topic or an exegesis supported by a substantial creative work, allowing them to explore performance, composition, production or other creative specialisations. Progress through the honours program depends on successful completion of assessments and approval of the student’s selected research or creative topic, which must be endorsed by the course coordinator. Throughout the candidature, each student works under the guidance of an appointed supervisor, with consultation requirements determined jointly by the supervisor and the Head of School before the commencement of each academic year. This ensures students receive appropriate academic support and direction while developing independent research or creative skills. Candidates are generally not permitted to enrol in additional units at UNE or any other institution during the honours year, unless special approval is granted by the course coordinator based on a recommendation from the Head of School. This rule ensures students can focus fully on their intensive honours workload. The honours program consists of one core unit, Honours in Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS400H), which carries the full 48 credit points. This unit forms the academic foundation of the honours year, guiding students through advanced study, research preparation and the development of their final dissertation or creative portfolio.
