COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Legal Studies requires students to complete 144 credit points, with specific rules that include no more than 60 credit points at 100 level, at least 36 credit points at 300 level and up to 12 credit points at 400 level, ensuring a balanced progression through foundational, intermediate and advanced studies. The structure begins with Core Units in Group 1, where students complete six essential subjects worth a total of 36 credit points, including Foundations of Law, Law in Context, Legal Professional Skills, Introduction to Business Law, Introduction to Procedure Law and Introduction to Legal Studies. These units establish the theoretical and practical grounding needed for further study. Group 2 requires students to select one six-credit-point unit from either Alternative Dispute Resolution or Law and First Peoples of Australia, enabling early specialisation. Group 3 adds another six credit points chosen between World Legal Systems or International Law, allowing students to develop an international perspective. The remaining 96 credit points are drawn from a wide range of listed units covering areas such as criminology, environmental law, programming, business, dispute resolution, intellectual property, local government, evidence law, corporate law, science, GIS, forensic science and work-integrated learning. This extensive list allows students to customise their studies to align with professional interests ranging from criminal justice to information technology or environmental policy. Students may also select advanced law electives including Sports Law, Law and Neuroscience, International Trade Law, Natural Resources Law and Animal Law, supporting specialised academic development. The course is designed with flexibility in mind, and alternative units may be approved by the Course Coordinator provided overall requirements are met. For full details, including course plans, exit pathways, intensive schools and work placement options, students are directed to consult the UNE Handbook, which provides the most comprehensive guidance for enrolled candidates.
