COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Language Studies requires students to complete 144 credit points, structured to ensure both depth and breadth in language learning. To qualify for the award, students must not exceed 60 credit points at 100 level and must complete at least 36 credit points at 300 or 400 level, with no more than 12 credit points permitted at 400 level. The program is designed to give students flexibility while ensuring they gain strong proficiency in multiple languages. Students must complete either one major in a chosen language and one minor in a second language, or they may choose to complete two majors in two different languages along with a minor in a third language if course rules allow. The core component of the course totals 6 credit points, chosen from units that develop foundational linguistic and intercultural skills. These include Developing Modern Languages Conversational Skills, Introduction to Linguistics, and Communicating in Culturally Diverse Contexts, offered at both introductory and advanced levels, though only one version of a repeated unit title may be counted. Students who receive exemptions from entry-level units in their minor must complete specific core units to make up their credit points. In addition to core units, candidates may complete up to 24 credit points from listed units such as Professional Portfolio in Translation, an in-country language study unit, or the overseas language study unit which offers immersive learning opportunities and can be repeated for certain languages. Majors require either 48 or 96 credit points depending on whether a student chooses one or two language majors, with options including Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Classical Languages. Students must also complete a 24 credit point minor from the approved list, which includes language minors and the Linguistics specialist minor. Remaining credit points may be filled with electives selected from the UNE Handbook, allowing students to tailor their degree toward specific interests or career goals.
