COURSE CURRICULUM
The course requires students to complete a total of 144 credit points, ensuring a balanced study load across different levels, with no more than 60 credit points at the 100 level, at least 36 credit points at the 300 level, and no more than 12 credit points at the 400 level. All candidates must complete 48 credit points of core units that build foundational and advanced skills in historical study. These include What is History? which introduces key concepts and methods in the discipline, The Historian which explores the role and practice of historians, and History: Uses and Abuses which encourages students to critically examine how history is interpreted and applied in various contexts. At the advanced level, students complete Researching and Applying History, Researching the Past in the Digital Age which emphasises digital research methods, History and Museums which examines public history and museum practice, Research and Professional Practice Project which provides applied experience, and The Craft of Academic Writing which develops essential scholarly communication skills. In addition to core units, students undertake 48 credit points toward majors, with the option to complete two majors or one major paired with either one or two minors. Available majors include Ancient History, Archaeology, Australian History, European History, Local, Family and Applied History, and History and Crime, allowing students to specialise according to their academic and professional interests. Students also complete 24 credit points of minors, choosing one or two from options such as Archaeological Practice, Classical Languages, and Writing History. Finally, students can select additional elective units, chosen from across the university, provided they meet prerequisite and schedule requirements. Detailed information, including study plans, exit pathways, intensive school requirements, and placement options, is available in the UNE Handbook, which serves as the primary guide for enrolled students.
