COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of GeoScience requires students to complete 144 credit points, ensuring they meet progression rules that limit study to no more than 62 credit points at 100 level, at least 36 credit points at 300 level, and no more than 12 credit points at 400 level. Throughout the degree, students must also complete Applied Geosciences each year, which steadily builds their professional skill development. The Core Units, totalling 66 credit points, establish a strong scientific and geological foundation. These include Chemistry I, key introductory geology units such as Our Blue Planet and Dynamic Earth, and practical-focused subjects like Field Mapping and Sedimentology, Structural and Metamorphic Geology, and Resource Geology and Environmental Issues. Students also study palaeontology through Introductory Palaeontology and advanced units such as Palaeontology and Stratigraphy, while specialised Applied Geosciences units in each study year add hands-on experience. Quantitative skills are developed through the Foundational Quantitative Methods unit, ensuring students can apply statistical and analytical techniques to geoscience problems. Beyond the core, students must complete six credit points from a short list of prescribed units, with Chemistry II strongly recommended for those pursuing the Geology major. Students then choose one major worth 48 credit points, specialising in either Geology or Palaeontology. Both majors allow deeper study in the chosen field and prepare students for professional or research pathways. Remaining credit points are made up through minors or elective units, allowing students to broaden their expertise or tailor their studies to specific interests such as environmental management, spatial science, archaeology or data science. Full details, including recommended study patterns, intensive school requirements and exit pathways, are provided in the UNE Handbook, which supports students in planning their progression and ensures they meet all academic and practical requirements for graduation.
