The Bachelor of Education (Secondary STEM) at UNE requires students to complete 192 credit points, which includes 80 days of embedded professional experience in designated teaching areas. Candidates must first complete 48 credit points of discipline units before commencing any curriculum units or their first professional experience placement. The Science Discipline component totals 96 credit points and is designed to develop specialist STEM knowledge across one or more teaching areas. Students begin by completing 60 credit points in a First Teaching Area chosen from Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science, Information Processes and Technology, Mathematics, Mathematics and Physics, Physics, or Software Design and Development. They then select a second area, completing 36 credit points in another First Teaching Area from Agriculture, Information Processes and Technology, Mathematics, or Software Design and Development, or alternatively, 24 credit points in an Additional Teaching Area and 12 additional credit points from any approved teaching area to complement their study. The Education component also totals 96 credit points and includes 80 days of professional experience. This comprises 60 credit points of compulsory education units, 36 credit points of curriculum units depending on the combination of teaching areas, and between 0 and 18 credit points of listed elective education units, with certain exceptions for candidates studying Information Processes and Technology or Software Design and Development. All candidates are expected to attempt the National Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students within the first 48 credit points of study and must pass it prior to the final placement. Additionally, candidates must successfully complete the Graduate Teacher Performance Assessment during the final professional experience to qualify for the award. This structure ensures students gain both deep disciplinary expertise in STEM subjects and the practical pedagogical skills necessary to become confident, reflective, and adaptable secondary teachers, ready to engage students with contemporary STEM learning experiences in real-world classroom settings.
