COURSE CURRICULUM

Option 1 of the Arts Discipline component requires candidates to complete a total of 96 credit points drawn from Group 1 Teaching Areas, structured to provide both depth and breadth across two First Teaching Areas and one Additional Teaching Area, or an alternative flexible combination. Under this option, candidates begin by selecting a First Teaching Area and completing 36 credit points in that discipline, ensuring no more than 12 credit points are taken at the 100 level and at least 12 credit points are completed at the 300 level to guarantee appropriate academic progression and discipline mastery. A second First Teaching Area must also be chosen, requiring another 36 credit points under the same level restrictions to meet NESA accreditation expectations for secondary teaching. In addition to the two First Teaching Areas, candidates must complete either 24 credit points from an Additional Teaching Area or, alternatively, 24 credit points from any approved Teaching Area to enhance their teaching flexibility. Additional Teaching Areas consist of 24 credit points with rules allowing no more than 12 credit points at the 100 level and requiring at least 12 credit points at the 200 level or above, ensuring that the study includes intermediate or advanced content. Candidates selecting introductory units for a Language must complete these within the flexible 24-credit-point option, as NESA requires all Language teaching content to be post-introductory (200-level or above). As a result, such students will complete only two First Teaching Areas, supported by 12 remaining credit points that may strengthen one or both areas. A specific exception applies to students choosing both Ancient History and Modern History as their First Teaching Areas, who must select the Additional Teaching Area option rather than the flexible option. Overall, Option 1 offers structured choice, academic rigour, and the flexibility needed to develop strong discipline expertise for secondary teaching.
