ABOUT UNIVERSITY
The University of New England, located in the New England region of New South Wales, Australia, is a public university known for being the first Australian institution established outside a state capital. Founded in 1938 as the New England University College under the University of Sydney, it became fully independent in 1954 through the University of New England Act 1953. The university is based in Armidale, a regional city positioned between Sydney and Brisbane, and as of 2021, it served around 26,000 students. UNE is recognized for strong student satisfaction, achieving one of the highest ratings in the 2019 Student Experience Survey, including the highest satisfaction level among public universities in New South Wales, although it generally ranks lower in research-focused university rankings. Its origins stem from early twentieth-century advocacy for expanding tertiary education beyond Sydney, particularly driven by local leaders such as David Drummond and associated with the broader New England statehood movement. Following establishment efforts throughout the 1920s and 1930s, the university grew through the mid-twentieth century, adding faculties such as education in 1967. A major transformation occurred in 1989 when UNE became part of a network university across multiple New South Wales locations, including Lismore, Orange, and Coffs Harbour. However, this model was reversed in 1993 when legislation restructured UNE back into a single-campus institution in Armidale, while creating Southern Cross University to manage the Lismore and Coffs Harbour campuses. The Orange Agricultural College later merged with the University of Sydney, further consolidating UNE’s stand-alone identity. In the 2020s, the university faced significant challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic, including exposure incidents and widespread testing on campus. Later in 2020, UNE announced major staff restructuring aimed at reducing costs by $20 million annually, resulting in the planned loss of around 100 positions as part of broader efforts to stabilize operations and prepare for future opportunities.
