COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Urban Horticulture is a 200-point program designed to equip students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to plan, design, and maintain sustainable urban green spaces. The course comprises 100 points of compulsory core subjects, covering essential areas such as green infrastructure for liveable cities, horticultural plant science, managing urban landscapes, plant health, plant production and establishment, plants in the landscape, urban horticulture issues and perspectives, and urban soils, substrates and water. In addition to core subjects, students complete a minimum of 75 points of discipline electives, which may include a research project of 25 or 50 points carried out over two semesters under expert supervision. Professional skills subjects, totaling between 12.5 and 25 points, allow students to gain practical experience, and there is an opportunity to undertake a horticulture industry internship of 80–160 hours for 12.5 or 25 points, providing workplace application, networking, and professional development. The program can be completed full-time over two years or part-time, with the option to exit after the first year with a Graduate Diploma in Urban Horticulture and return later to complete the master’s degree. The structure ensures a blend of theoretical knowledge, research experience, and hands-on practice, preparing graduates to contribute to sustainable urban greening initiatives, improve community wellbeing, and address environmental challenges in urban settings.
