COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Urban Design program integrates theoretical knowledge with practical application through a strong studio-based learning model that emphasises innovation and real-world engagement. Studio projects form a central part of the course and focus on speculative design research that encourages creativity,experimentation, and problem-solving. These studios highlight the importance of understanding place through fieldwork and incorporate cutting-edge technologies such as geospatial analytics, multidimensional and procedural modelling, and virtual reality tools to analyse and design urban environments. The program places strong value on professional and community involvement, giving students opportunities to engage with industry experts, government partners, and local communities to address real urban challenges. Alongside studio learning, students undertake subjects in urban history, theory, communication, planning issues, design practice, and research, which together build a comprehensive foundation in contemporary urban design principles and methods. The course structure requires the completion of 125 points of core subjects and 50 points of electives, allowing students to tailor their study according to personal interests or career goals. Additionally, students complete a 25-point Urban Design Thesis (ABPL90376), which serves as the capstone experience and enables students to investigate a specialised area of interest in depth. This thesis develops research skills and prepares students for future academic pathways, including potential doctoral study. Through its blend of theory, technology, fieldwork, and collaboration, the Master of Urban Design equips students with the practical and conceptual skills necessary for professional practice and leadership in shaping sustainable, functional, and aesthetically engaging urban spaces.
