COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Translation and Interpreting is designed to develop advanced skills in professional translation and interpreting between English and Chinese. Throughout the program, you will build specialist capabilities in both written and oral translation, working with authentic materials and real-world communication scenarios. You will develop professional competence in specialised areas such as legal and business translation, terminology management and the use of contemporary translation technologies, while gaining practical insight into navigating cultural, linguistic and intellectual boundaries between Chinese and English-speaking communities. The program integrates theoretical and practical learning, enabling you to understand the principles that underpin translation and interpreting and apply them effectively in professional contexts. You will study through intensive small-group teaching, independent learning supported by digital tools, and engagement with industry professionals through placement opportunities in translation and interpreting environments. To broaden your expertise, you may complement your studies with electives in culture, communication, language and linguistics. The program offers two pathways: a 200-point program completed over two years (full-time) and a 150-point option for eligible students with prior learning in a related discipline. The 200-point program includes compulsory subjects, core subjects, elective options and a capstone requirement, which must be completed during the final stage of the course. All students undertake at least one capstone experience, such as a research project or industry placement, enabling practical integration of knowledge and preparation for professional roles. Students in the 150-point program follow a similar structure with reduced compulsory and elective requirements. The curriculum includes subjects such as Translation Theory and Practice, Translating in Australian and Chinese contexts, Translating to and from English and Chinese, Business and Legal Translation and AI and Intercultural Communication. This program prepares you to graduate with strong linguistic competence, cultural intelligence and industry-ready skills.
