COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Theatre (Directing) is a 24-month full-time program designed as a 200 credit point course that blends theory and practice to develop the skills, knowledge, and leadership required of contemporary theatre directors. The program is structured across four semesters, with the first year focused on intensive, skills-based learning and the second year emphasising independent, project-oriented work. In the first year, students complete 100 credit points through compulsory subjects that establish a foundation in research, dramaturgy, directing methodologies, and collaborative practice. Semester one includes subjects such as Performing Arts Research Methodologies, Dramaturgy, Text and Performance, Directing Methodologies, and Collaboration in Action, all aimed at building technical competence and critical understanding. Semester two continues with compulsory subjects including Collaborative Dramaturgies Project, Director, Actor and Text, and Performance and Community Engagement, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge to practical and community-based projects. The second year moves into a more independent framework, with Semester one offering early-start subjects like Industry Internships and Placements and Creating a Project Vision, giving students hands-on professional experience and the opportunity to develop a strategic approach to their creative work. The program culminates in Semester two with a 50-point capstone Independent Directing Project, which can take the form of a practice-led research performance project or a written dissertation. This capstone enables students to synthesise their learning from previous semesters, demonstrate leadership in directing, and produce original, high-quality work that reflects both artistic vision and practical expertise. Throughout the program, students engage closely with peers, faculty, and industry professionals, fostering collaboration, creative experimentation, and professional development, ensuring graduates are equipped to lead, innovate, and make a meaningful impact in the theatre industry.
