COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master of Theatre (Dramaturgy) is a 150 credit point program delivered over 18 months full-time or 36 months part-time, providing an integrated balance of theoretical study and practical training. The course is structured across three semesters and offers a rich educational experience through laboratory-based workshops, seminars, lectures, self-directed exercises, tutorials, practical masterclasses, participation in performance projects, and the completion of an independent capstone project. Students begin by developing foundational knowledge in dramaturgical thinking, collaborative practice and research methodologies. In the first semester, core subjects introduce performing arts research methods, applied dramaturgy, the relationship between text and performance, and interdisciplinary approaches to collaboration. These subjects provide a strong base for engaging critically with creative material and for shaping the dramaturgical process in performance environments.During the second semester, students apply their skills within collaborative performance contexts through the Collaborative Dramaturgies Project, and deepen their craft in Applied Dramaturgy 2. They develop specialised expertise in working with new writing for performance, while also exploring the role of dramaturgy in community-based and participatory settings. This practical, project-focused learning fosters professional readiness and creative leadership. In the final semester, students undertake the Independent Dramaturgy Project, a substantial capstone that enables them to pursue an area of personal or professional interest in depth. Supported by the Creating a Project Vision subject, the capstone experience encourages students to synthesise knowledge gained throughout the program and to demonstrate artistic initiative, critical insight and collaborative capability.Through immersive training, real-world project work and interdisciplinary engagement, the Master of Theatre (Dramaturgy) prepares graduates to contribute confidently to contemporary performance industries in roles that demand creativity, research, adaptability and artistic leadership.
