COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Surgery by Research is structured around a thesis subject, through which students undertake a focused research project for the duration of their degree. Candidates are required to complete at least six months of full-time research at the University to fully engage in planning, conducting, and writing up their research within an academic environment. Normally, the entire program is undertaken on campus, ensuring access to resources, facilities, and expert supervision.Students are supported by experienced academics who design a supervised research program tailored to individual requirements and interests. Depending on the needs of the research, candidates may be asked to enrol in additional subjects or attend supplementary sessions as recommended by their supervisors. Engagement with departmental seminars is expected throughout the candidature, providing opportunities for feedback, discussion, and exposure to ongoing research in the field.Academic progress is monitored regularly to ensure students meet the program milestones. The research thesis is examined externally and is typically between 30,000 and 40,000 words, excluding tables, illustrations, and bibliography. The University’s policy library and Graduate Research Hub provide guidance on candidature, academic progress, ethics, thesis preparation, and examination procedures.To be eligible to submit the thesis for examination, students must be enrolled for a minimum period of six months full-time equivalent. The program equips graduates with advanced research skills, specialized knowledge in surgical practice, and the ability to contribute original research to the field, preparing them for leadership roles in clinical, academic, and research settings.
