COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Speech Pathology provides a comprehensive and practice-focused education designed to prepare students for professional practice in assessing and treating communication and swallowing disorders. Delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, practical workshops and student presentations, the course integrates academic study with extensive clinical experience to support the development of skilled, confident and compassionate practitioners. A significant aspect of the program is the clinical component, where students undertake approximately 400 hours of supervised placement across a diverse range of healthcare and educational settings in both metropolitan and rural areas of Victoria. These placements enable students to apply theoretical knowledge to real clinical contexts and work directly with clients across the lifespan. The course includes core subjects that build foundational and advanced knowledge in health determinants, communication development, linguistics, speech and language disorders, swallowing and voice, fluency disorders, and complex case management. Students progressively develop assessment and intervention skills through subjects such as Clinical Processes A and B, Planning and Integrating Intervention and a sequence of Speech Pathology Practice units that enhance clinical reasoning and professional competence. The program also emphasises research literacy through Research in Speech Pathology and a substantial Speech Pathology Research Project, preparing graduates to evaluate and apply evidence-based practices. Professional readiness is further supported by subjects addressing ethical and legal issues, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the development of reflective clinical skills. With its strong clinical focus, expert teaching, and opportunities for real-world learning, the Master of Speech Pathology equips students to enter the workforce as accredited speech pathologists capable of supporting individuals with communication and swallowing difficulties in hospitals, community health services, rehabilitation centres, schools, aged care facilities, private practices and specialist programs.
