COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Software Engineering program is structured to accommodate students from diverse academic backgrounds, beginning with foundational engineering subjects in the first year for those without prior engineering experience. Students who have completed relevant majors such as Computing and Software Systems or Computing during their bachelor’s degree, along with required mathematics and science courses, can receive credit for these foundation subjects and start directly in the second year. In the second and third years, the focus shifts to core software engineering disciplines, where students learn to design, develop, and manage both large and small-scale software systems. The curriculum covers essential topics such as algorithms, internet technologies, and database systems, while also offering advanced subjects ranging from artificial intelligence to cloud computing. A significant component of the program involves undertaking an industry, design, or research project, providing practical experience and preparing students to work professionally as software engineers. Students have the option to specialize in one of five areas or complete the degree without specialization, depending on their career goals and interests. The specializations include Artificial Intelligence, which focuses on machine learning, planning, and digital ethics; Business, which integrates economics, marketing, and finance through partnership with the Melbourne Business School; Cyber Security, emphasizing the creation of secure technologies and topics like cryptography; Distributed Computing, which deals with managing large-scale data via networked systems and explores parallel computing; and Human Computer Interaction, which centers on developing innovative user interfaces and studying user experience and social computing. This flexible structure allows students to tailor their learning to align with industry demands and personal aspirations, equipping graduates with both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for success in the dynamic field of software engineering.
