COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science (Physics) is a comprehensive 200-point program designed to develop advanced expertise in physics while preparing students for research and professional careers. The structure of the course combines discipline-focused study, professional skill development and an extensive research project, allowing you to specialise in an area of physics that aligns with your interests and career goals. The program consists of 87.5 points of discipline subjects, which include compulsory coursework and a selection of electives, along with eligible third-year subjects that broaden theoretical and practical knowledge. In addition, students complete at least 12.5 points of professional skills subjects, which are available across areas such as scientific modelling, data analysis, ethics, business tools, scientific computing and communication. These subjects are designed to help students build transferable skills that enhance employability across a range of scientific and technical professions. A major component of the degree is the 100-point research project, which extends across the two years of study. Most students undertake the majority of their coursework in the first year while beginning initial stages of their research project. The second year focuses primarily on completing the research project while finalising any remaining coursework requirements. Research opportunities span a diverse range of fields that reflect areas of internationally recognised excellence, including astrophysics, theoretical and experimental particle physics, atomic, molecular and optical physics, condensed matter physics, biophysics, nanoscience and quantum information science. By choosing a project in one of these research areas, students gain direct experience working alongside leading researchers and contributing to cutting-edge scientific discovery.
