COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science (Mathematics and Statistics) is a 200-point program designed to provide advanced knowledge and practical expertise in mathematics, statistics, and their diverse applications. The degree equips students for specialist roles in industry, data-driven sectors, and research, while providing a strong foundation for further graduate studies. It is ideal for graduates with a quantitative background who want to deepen their analytical skills and explore complex problems in mathematics and statistics.The course comprises 137.5 points of discipline subjects, including compulsory and elective advanced mathematics and statistics subjects. Students also complete a 12.5-point professional skills subject, which can include scientific computing, modelling, or science communication, to enhance their practical capabilities and employability. Central to the program is a research project of 50 points (or 25 points with approval), undertaken over 12–18 months under the guidance of a faculty supervisor. The project allows students to investigate a significant mathematical or statistical problem, applying theoretical knowledge to real-world or theoretical research questions.Students choose a specialisation from five streams: Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Biology, Operations Research and Industrial Optimisation, Pure Mathematics, Statistics and Stochastic Processes, or Mathematical Physics and Physical Combinatorics. This enables a focused study while retaining flexibility to select additional subjects, including options from physics, computer science, bioinformatics, or the AMSI National Graduate Summer School.Through a combination of coursework, professional skills development, and a major research project, graduates develop a rigorous understanding of advanced mathematical and statistical techniques, alongside the ability to communicate complex concepts effectively. The program prepares students to tackle challenges across industries, from healthcare and finance to logistics and research institutions, equipping them with both theoretical insight and practical tools to transform data into actionable knowledge.
