COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master of Science (Earth Sciences) is a 200-point program designed to develop advanced knowledge and research capability in the field of Earth sciences. The course is structured to include 50 points of discipline core subjects, 0–12.5 points of discipline electives, 12.5–25 points of professional skills subjects, and a substantial 125-point research project completed across four semesters. Students have the flexibility to specialise in one of two streams, Atmospheric Science or Geology, selecting from a wide range of core and elective subjects that align with their academic background and career objectives. Professional skills subjects such as scientific communication, business, programming, modelling and related areas help strengthen essential workplace competencies and prepare graduates for diverse scientific environments.A major component of the degree is the research project, where students work independently under the guidance of an expert academic supervisor on a real-world research problem. This extended research experience encourages the development of advanced analytical, technical and problem-solving abilities. Students are supported throughout the process and are encouraged to submit their final research report for publication in an academic journal. Current research strengths within the department include climate variability and change, sedimentary geology, archaeological science, and the physics and chemistry of Earth’s deep interior, offering opportunities to engage in cutting-edge scientific inquiry.A sample 200-point course plan demonstrates how subjects and research project stages can be structured across the two-year program. In the first year, students complete a mix of coursework and the initial stages of the Earth Sciences Research Project, progressing from Part 1 and 2. The second year focuses more intensively on research through Parts 3 and 4 of the project, alongside remaining electives or professional skills subjects. This combination of coursework, flexible study options, and substantial research training ensures graduates are prepared for advanced scientific careers, industry roles, or further study at the PhD level.
