COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science (BioSciences) at the University of Melbourne is a 200-point, research-intensive program designed for students seeking to advance their expertise in the life sciences. The course blends core discipline subjects, elective topics, professional skills training, and an extensive research project, providing both breadth and depth across biological disciplines.Students undertake 25 points of core discipline subjects to establish foundational knowledge, and 25–37.5 points of elective subjects, selected in consultation with their research supervisor to align with the focus of their research. Professional skills subjects, including the mandatory “Communication for Research Scientists,” equip students to effectively present and disseminate scientific findings. Optional internships of 80–100 hours in a science or technology workplace provide real-world experience, connecting theory to practice.The central component of the degree is the research project, accounting for 125 points. Full-time students typically begin their project in the first year alongside coursework, and devote the second year primarily to research, while part-time students extend the project over three to four years. The research program allows students to explore cutting-edge topics in areas such as molecular biology, ecology, genetics, plant pathology, aquaculture, and sensory ecology. Supervision by internationally recognised researchers ensures students gain advanced research skills, from experimental design and data analysis to critical thinking and problem-solving.Throughout the program, students are encouraged to collaborate, develop interdisciplinary approaches, and integrate theoretical knowledge with practical applications.
