COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master of Science (Bioinformatics) is a comprehensive 200-point program designed to develop advanced skills for analysing biological data using computational and statistical methods. The course is structured to include 137.5 points of discipline-focused subjects, 12.5 points dedicated to scientific communication, and a substantial 50-point research project. In the first year, subjects are carefully selected based on each student’s academic background, whether in biology, biomedicine, mathematics, statistics or computer science, ensuring an appropriate foundation for advanced study. Students develop essential skills through core subjects such as programming, probability, algorithms, statistics and elements of bioinformatics. In the second year, the focus shifts to strengthening expertise in sophisticated analysis tools, with subjects including computational genomics, statistics for bioinformatics, case studies and algorithms tailored to large-scale biological data. A key component of the degree is the research project, undertaken across 12 to 18 months and centred on a real-world bioinformatics problem. Students are matched with expert supervisors from the Melbourne Biomedical Precinct, allowing them to gain meaningful experience in research environments that are leaders in global biomedical innovation. This project enables students to apply theoretical understanding to practical challenges, contributing new knowledge to the field. The program also includes a subject on communication for research scientists, ensuring graduates can present complex scientific information confidently and professionally to both specialist and general audiences. Elective subjects are selected in consultation with the Course Coordinator, providing flexibility to shape learning pathways according to career aspirations. Graduates of the Master of Science (Bioinformatics) emerge with advanced analytical skills, technical expertise and research experience that prepare them for careers in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical research, agricultural genomics, government science agencies and data-driven healthcare industries, where demand for highly skilled bioinformatics professionals continues to rise.
