COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master of Clinical Neuropsychology is designed to equip graduates with the advanced skills and knowledge required to practice as clinical neuropsychologists across diverse professional environments. Graduates develop a comprehensive understanding of clinical neurosciences and how these principles apply to the assessment, diagnosis and intervention of neurological disorders arising from cerebral disease and injury. The program emphasises rigorous scientific and clinical training, enabling students to evaluate and diagnose neuropsychological disorders using internationally recognised classification systems. Throughout the degree, students build strong communication skills essential for preparing clinical reports, consulting effectively with multidisciplinary referral sources and collaborating with other health professionals. A key component of the program is the development of evidence-based intervention strategies tailored to individual needs, as well as the ability to evaluate treatment efficacy and utilise appropriate referral pathways to support optimal patient outcomes. Students are also trained to investigate substantive scientific questions relevant to the field, contributing to research that advances clinical practice. Ethical reasoning and knowledge of professional standards are core elements, with particular focus on the Australian Psychological Society Code of Ethics and the NHMRC National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research. The course structure includes two years of academic study combined with extensive supervised clinical placements, giving students the opportunity to apply their knowledge in real-world settings. Core subjects in the first year include literature review, adult neuropsychological disorders, graduate research methods, basic interventions, adult psychopathology, neuroanatomy, cognitive-behaviour therapy, clinical skills in neuropsychology, neuroscience and psychopharmacology, principles of psychological assessment and ethics and professional issues. The second year includes advanced clinical placements, subjects in child and developmental psychopathology, neuropsychological rehabilitation and a major thesis completed in two parts. By graduation, students are prepared for competent, reflective and ethical clinical practice in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, mental health services, private practice and research institutions.
