COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Private Law requires students to complete a total of 100 credit points, offering a flexible structure designed to accommodate different academic backgrounds and professional commitments. Students who do not possess a law degree from a common law jurisdiction must complete the subject Fundamentals of the Common Law as part of their program requirements, together with 87.5 credit points chosen from the prescribed list of specialised subjects that support advanced study in private law. For students who already hold a law degree from a common law jurisdiction, the structure allows for greater flexibility, requiring the completion of 87.5 credit points from the designated list and permitting them to select an additional 12.5 credit points from subjects offered within the Master of Laws program, excluding Fundamentals of the Common Law and the Minor Thesis. The subject delivery format has been specifically crafted to meet the needs of working professionals, with teaching offered from February to December each year to support year-round study opportunities. Many subjects are delivered in intensive mode across five consecutive days to allow concentrated learning without long-term scheduling conflicts, while others are structured as weekly sessions of two hours throughout the semester. Students also have the option to undertake subjects online, incorporating a blend of pre-recorded lectures, live interactive sessions, and collaborative discussion forums, while face-to-face subjects take place in seminar-style learning environments within the Law Building at the Parkville campus. The duration of the course depends on the study load chosen. Full-time students typically enrol in 50 credit points per semester, enabling completion within one year, while part-time domestic students may take 25 credit points each semester and finish within two years, with the option to reduce further to 12.5 points per half-year period, extending the program to a maximum of four years if required.
