COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Music (Opera Performance) is a two-year, 200 credit point program designed to provide intensive, professional training for opera singers and répétiteurs. The program is structured around four key areas: Opera Performance Practicum, Core Skills in Opera, Research Studies, and Supporting Studies. Through a combination of coursework, performance, and research, students develop advanced technical skills, artistic versatility, and professional experience required for a career in opera. The course emphasizes practical, hands-on learning, with specialist training provided through vocational placements in professional opera companies such as Victorian Opera or Pinchgut Opera, as well as participation in the University’s in-house opera productions.In the first year, students focus on foundational skills, beginning with Opera Performance Practicum 1 and Core Skills in Opera 1, complemented by electives such as Acting for Opera Performance. These subjects provide intensive coaching in vocal technique, performance practice, and stagecraft. Semester two continues the development with Opera Performance Practicum 2 and Core Skills in Opera 2, further refining students’ abilities through performance and practice-based learning.The second year emphasizes advanced training and professional preparation. Semester one includes Opera Performance Practicum 3 and Core Skills in Opera 3, along with Major Role Preparation, allowing students to take on significant performance roles and develop stage experience. Semester two focuses on the capstone component, Opera Performance Practicum 4, where students consolidate their skills and demonstrate mastery in performance under professional conditions. Additional graduate electives offer opportunities to broaden expertise and pursue individual artistic interests.Overall, the program combines rigorous technical training, creative development, and practical experience, preparing graduates to perform at an elite level in opera. Students emerge with a comprehensive skill set, including vocal performance, role development, acting, and music research, positioning them for professional success in both national and international opera contexts.
