COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Modern Languages Education at the University of Melbourne prepares students to teach languages other than English in a variety of educational settings. The program focuses on curriculum, pedagogy, and language instruction to ensure effective classroom practice, and offers a combination of face-to-face learning and supported teacher placements. Students can begin the course in either semester 1 or 2, and study full-time or part-time (domestic students only), providing flexibility for professional or personal commitments.The standard program is designed for students without prior teaching qualifications or experience. It consists of 200 points of coursework, with the first year including six compulsory subjects and two electives. Students complete four compulsory subjects in the first semester and the remaining two compulsory subjects alongside two electives in the second semester. The second year includes six additional languages electives and a capstone subject, which may include an international travel option.A research option is available for students aiming to pursue graduate research, such as a PhD. Eligible students must achieve a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 75 percent or higher and complete two research subjects in the final 50 points of the course.The fast-track program offers up to 100 points of advanced standing for applicants with a relevant four-year education degree or significant graduate-level study in education. Fast-track students can also undertake the Languages Teaching specialisation, which includes 22 days of supervised school placement and requires eligibility for Victorian Institute of Teaching registration. Applicants who have completed the Graduate Certificate in Modern Languages Education may receive advanced standing and credit toward the Languages Teaching specialisation.Classes are delivered on the Parkville campus, supplemented by practical teaching experience in primary, secondary, or adult education settings. This structure ensures students gain both theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for a successful career in modern languages education.
