COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Medicine (by Research) requires students to be enrolled in a thesis subject for the duration of their degree, completing a research project under expert supervision. The normal period of candidature is 18 months for full-time students, with the possibility of an extension of up to six months. Students must undertake a minimum of six months of full-time research at the University to fully engage with the planning, execution, and documentation of their project within a supportive academic environment.The degree is generally completed on campus, allowing students to benefit from direct interaction with experienced academics and access to University facilities. Supervisors tailor the research program to meet individual requirements and research interests, and students may be required to undertake additional coursework or subjects to support their project. Throughout the program, candidates are expected to attend departmental seminars and maintain regular academic progress, which is formally reviewed by the University.The thesis, which is externally examined, is typically between 30,000 and 40,000 words excluding tables, illustrations, and bibliography. Submission is only possible after the minimum required period of enrolment is completed. Students are encouraged to consult the University policy library and the Graduate Research Hub for detailed guidance on candidature, academic progress, ethics, thesis preparation, and examination procedures.Graduates of this program will develop advanced skills in medical research, including critical thinking, problem-solving, and evidence-based practice. They will gain the ability to independently design and execute a research project, communicate scientific findings effectively, and contribute to the advancement of medical knowledge and patient care. The program provides a pathway to further academic research, including higher degrees by research or professional roles requiring high-level research expertise in medicine.
