COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Mechanical Engineering is a comprehensive 2–3 year full-time program designed to equip students with advanced professional engineering skills, with the duration depending on prior academic background. In the first year, students from non-engineering bachelors complete foundation engineering subjects that build essential knowledge for success in later stages. Those who have already completed a Mechanical Systems major with the required mathematics and science prerequisites receive credit for this first-year content and commence directly in the second year. During the second and third years, the program focuses on core mechanical engineering areas such as turning energy into power and motion, designing and operating mechanical systems, and applying principles of fluid mechanics, turbulence and biomechanics. Students also undertake substantial project-based learning, including an industry placement, design project or research-focused Mechanical Engineering Capstone Project, where they can collaborate with leading researchers or work directly with industry partners and showcase outcomes at the Endeavour Engineering and IT Exhibition. The degree provides flexibility through four specialist streams: Aerospace, where students gain expertise in propulsion, aeroelasticity and aerospace control using facilities like the Walter Bassett Aerodynamics Laboratory; Business, involving specialised management subjects connecting engineering with economics, marketing and finance; Manufacturing, focused on automation, computer-based production, materials selection and machine component design; and Materials, exploring advanced processing, additive manufacturing metals, and high-performance material development. Students may also opt to complete the program without a specialisation. Industry engagement is a strong focus, with activities such as the academically credited Internship subject over 10–15 weeks across sectors including aerostructures, biotechnology, infrastructure, mining and manufacturing, and the Creating Innovative Engineering subject, which challenges students to solve real industry problems alongside mentors. Graduates emerge prepared for global careers as mechanical engineers, equipped with practical experience, multidisciplinary knowledge and the ability to innovate in diverse engineering environments.
