COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Law and Development requires students to complete 100 credit points in total and is designed to provide flexible study pathways suitable for a range of academic and professional backgrounds. All students undertake the compulsory subject International Law and Development, which forms the foundation for advanced exploration of legal and institutional frameworks that shape global development. Students without a law degree must also complete International Law to ensure grounding in essential legal principles before progressing into specialised subjects. The remaining credit points may be selected from a broad range of subjects relevant to the Law and Development specialisation, organised across key thematic areas that allow students to tailor their program to their interests and intended career direction. Teaching delivery is designed to accommodate working professionals, with subjects offered from February to December each year in intensive formats over five days or through weekly two-hour classes scheduled throughout the semester. Subjects may be delivered online, on campus or through hybrid teaching modes, incorporating pre-recorded content, live interactive sessions and discussion forums to support active and engaged learning. On-campus classes are held in the Law Building in Melbourne and feature seminar-style teaching that encourages collaborative discussion and critical analysis. Full-time students enrol in 50 credit points per semester and typically complete the program in one year, while part-time students study 25 credit points per semester with an expected duration of two years. Domestic students studying part-time may reduce their enrolment to 12.5 credit points per half-year period, extending the course to a maximum of four years if needed. Students taking a break from study during any semester must apply for a leave of absence, ensuring structured progression and program continuity over the course of their degree.
