COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Journalism is a 200-point program designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in contemporary journalism, combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills. The program is structured to accommodate students from a range of undergraduate backgrounds and experience levels, offering pathways that suit beginners as well as professionals seeking to update their skills. All students begin with a compulsory subject, Researching/Writing Stories, which introduces the essential techniques for sourcing, researching, and producing journalistic content. Following this, students complete a minimum of 75 points of core subjects, which develop skills across multiple media platforms including audio, video, and photo journalism, and explore the principles, history, and ethics of the profession. Students then select elective subjects, allowing them to tailor the program to their interests, whether that be in areas such as media law, data journalism, podcasting, globalisation, or climate and health policy. The program culminates in one of three capstone streams, giving students the opportunity to demonstrate their learning in a substantial, practice-based or research-focused project. These include a minor thesis, an internship in a professional media organisation, or a journalism project, such as a portfolio of articles, multimedia content, or a podcast series, supervised under industry-standard conditions. For students with relevant prior study or professional experience, the program offers accelerated pathways through 150-point or 100-point options, allowing completion in less time while maintaining access to core subjects, electives, and the capstone requirement. Across all pathways, the Master of Journalism provides a bridge between academic study and professional practice, supporting students to build a versatile, industry-ready skillset and develop professional networks, preparing graduates to thrive in the fast-changing media landscape.
