COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master of Intellectual Property Law is a 100 credit point program designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of intellectual property law and its practical applications. Students with a law degree from a common law jurisdiction complete a minimum of 50 credit points of IP subjects and may take up to 50 credit points of IP-relevant subjects. Students without a law degree from a common law jurisdiction must also complete the 12.5 credit point foundation subject Fundamentals of the Common Law, in addition to 50 credit points of IP subjects and up to 37.5 credit points of IP-relevant subjects.Subjects are offered from February to December and are designed to accommodate working professionals. They can be delivered online, on campus, or as a hybrid. Online subjects combine pre-recorded lectures, live sessions, and discussion boards, while on-campus subjects are interactive, seminar-style classes held in Melbourne. Full-time students enroll in 50 credit points per semester, typically completing the program in one year. Part-time domestic students enroll in 25 credit points per semester, with a maximum course duration of four years if taking a reduced load.A key introductory subject, Overview of Intellectual Property, provides a two-day survey of the various IP regimes and is accredited by the Trans-Tasman IP Attorneys Board (TTIPAB) as satisfying part of its accreditation requirements for Topic Group A. Completion of the appropriate subjects can enable students to qualify as trade marks or patent attorneys under the Trans-Tasman regime, subject to consultation with TTIPAB and Melbourne Law School. TTIPAB accreditation covers multiple topic groups, including legal process, professional conduct, trade marks, patents, drafting, interpretation, and designs.Students can choose from a broad range of IP and IP-relevant subjects. IP subjects include Copyright Law, Designs Law and Practice, Fundamentals of Intellectual Property, Patent Law, Trade Mark Practice, International IP Dispute Settlement, and Intellectual Property Protection in Asia. IP-relevant subjects cover topics such as Artificial Intelligence and the Law, Digital Trade, Entertainment Law, Privacy Law, Online Streaming, Film and TV Law, and Biotechnology and the Law in Asia.
