COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Industrial Research (Chemistry) is a 200-point program that combines advanced coursework with an intensive industry-based research project. The degree is structured to provide 150 points from the research project and 50 points from core and elective coursework. Students undertake their research within industry laboratories, supervised jointly by Faculty of Science staff and industry partners. The research experience includes the preparation of a project proposal, execution of the experimental work, and submission of a final research report or thesis, culminating in a seminar presentation to communicate the findings.Elective subjects are chosen from a broad range of options, allowing students to tailor their learning to support both scientific and professional development. Coursework covers areas such as advanced chemistry topics, business, scientific communication, ethics, statistics, and modelling, equipping graduates with a combination of technical expertise and transferable professional skills.Previous industry projects provide examples of the type of research undertaken in the program. One project at Dulux Innovation Centre involved the synthesis and characterisation of novel paint additives to reduce the release of volatile organic compounds during drying, with testing conducted using industry-standard methods. Another project at Qenos Technical Centre focused on polymer stabilisers, analysing their behaviour in high-density polyethylene composites and investigating molecular changes to inform the development of more durable products. These projects demonstrate the applied, industry-focused nature of the program and the opportunity for students to contribute to real-world industrial challenges.Graduates of the program gain advanced technical skills, experience in professional research settings, and the ability to communicate scientific outcomes effectively, preparing them for careers in chemical and materials industries, pharmaceutical development, and other sectors that rely on innovative applied chemistry.
