COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Health and Medical Law is a 100-credit point program designed to provide legal and healthcare professionals with a comprehensive understanding of the legal and ethical issues in health and medical practice. The course structure varies based on a student’s legal background. Students who do not hold a law degree from a common law jurisdiction are required to complete the subject Fundamentals of the Common Law, along with 87.5 credit points from the prescribed list of subjects. Those with a law degree from a common law jurisdiction must complete 87.5 credit points from the prescribed list and may select an additional 12.5 credit points from the Master of Laws offerings, excluding Fundamentals of the Common Law and the Minor Thesis.This program addresses a wide range of contemporary issues, including medical negligence, patient consent, public health law, mental health, biotechnology, and regulatory oversight. It prepares graduates for roles in legal practice, healthcare administration, policy development, and compliance by equipping them with critical analytical skills and deep legal knowledge specific to the health sector.Designed with flexibility in mind, the program suits the needs of busy professionals. Subjects are delivered between February and December and are offered in intensive five-day formats or weekly semester-based classes. Students can choose to study online, on campus in Melbourne, or through a hybrid model. Online subjects combine pre-recorded lectures, live sessions, and interactive discussion boards, while on-campus learning takes place in small, seminar-style settings to promote active engagement and collaboration.This flexible and rigorous program allows graduates to deepen their expertise and broaden their impact across legal, clinical, and policy-making environments. With a strong foundation in health and medical law, graduates are well-prepared to navigate the legal complexities of modern healthcare systems and contribute to ethical, legally sound decision-making in their professional roles.
