COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Geoscience is a comprehensive 200-point program designed to provide both broad and deep training in the field of geoscience. The course is structured to develop technical expertise alongside professional and research skills, making it suitable for students aiming for careers in sectors such as minerals, energy, environmental management, and geotechnical engineering.The first year of the program focuses on foundational knowledge, with 50 credit points of core subjects that establish essential geoscientific concepts and methods. In the second year, students complete an additional 25 points of core subjects, deepening their understanding of advanced geoscience topics. Beyond the core curriculum, students choose 37.5 credit points of stream-specific subjects, allowing them to tailor their learning to particular interests within geoscience, such as exploration, environmental monitoring, or geological modelling.Students also complete between 37.5 and 62.5 points of discipline electives, providing flexibility to broaden or further specialise their expertise. These electives cover a range of geoscientific and related topics and are selected based on individual career goals and academic interests. An additional 25 to 50 credit points are allocated to professional skills development. These subjects focus on leadership, communication, and business acumen, ensuring graduates are well-rounded professionals prepared for complex roles in industry or government.Students who excel in the subject Practical Earth Science A and demonstrate a strong aptitude for research may be eligible to complete a 25-point Research Project in Geoscience. This research opportunity is contingent on supervisor availability and provides a pathway to further study, including potential admission to a PhD program.Overall, the Master of Geoscience combines technical, practical, and professional training to prepare graduates for high-impact roles in one of the world’s most vital and evolving industries.
