COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Genetic Counselling is a two-year professionally accredited program designed to prepare students for careers as genetic counsellors, combining advanced clinical genetics and genomics knowledge with counselling theory, research practice, and consideration of societal implications of genetics in healthcare. The first year (100 credit points) must be completed full-time, while the second year (100 credit points) may be undertaken part-time, offering flexibility for students. The program uses a blended learning approach, including face-to-face tutorials, online modules, practical workshops, and problem-based learning, which promotes independent learning and equips students to continue developing professionally throughout their careers.Students gain extensive experience in clinical and community settings, with placements structured to mirror the skills required for professional certification by the Human Genetics Society of Australasia (HGSA). Core subjects cover human genetics and genomics in healthcare, clinical genomics, the societal implications of genomics, foundational counselling practice, advanced communication skills, and healthcare research principles. Students also undertake a research monograph in human genomics under supervision, building research competencies alongside practical counselling expertise.The second year emphasizes applied clinical experience, with advanced clinical genomics, genetic counselling practice, and a substantial clinical placement component, allowing students to consolidate their skills in real-world healthcare environments. This combination of coursework, applied practice, and research ensures graduates are well-prepared to provide risk assessment, education, counselling, and emotional support to individuals, couples, and families navigating genetic conditions.Upon graduation, students are eligible for employment as Associate Genetic Counsellors in Australia and internationally, with pathways for ongoing professional development toward full certification. The program cultivates not only technical expertise but also ethical, communication, and reflective practice skills, enabling graduates to make a meaningful impact on patients’ lives while advancing the field of clinical genetics and genomics.
