COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Environmental Science is a comprehensive 200-point program designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills and practical experience needed to address critical global environmental challenges. Throughout the course, students explore issues such as climate change, air, water and soil contamination, biodiversity conservation, energy transition, and sustainable resource management. The curriculum blends scientific theory with applied learning to prepare graduates for careers across environmental science, policy, consulting, industry and research. The program structure includes 62.5 points of core subjects, 87.5 to 112.5 points of discipline-specific subjects, up to 25 points of broadening environmental studies, and 25 to 37.5 points of professional skills subjects. In the first year, students complete foundational subjects including Global Environmental Change and Environmental Risk Assessment while selecting elective subjects from a wide range of scientific and professional areas. These subjects develop an understanding of the scientific methods used to investigate environmental systems, including empirical research, modelling and risk evaluation, while also building skills in communication and decision-making relevant to environmental policy and management. During the second year, students undertake additional elective subjects and participate in the Graduate Seminar: Environmental Science, where they engage in discussions and presentations on emerging topics through journal analysis and case studies. A major component of the program is the year-long Industry Project in Environmental Science, where students collaborate with an industry partner to investigate a real environmental issue, spending time in the workplace to understand the problem from both scientific and organisational perspectives. This applied project offers valuable hands-on experience, industry connections and opportunities to contribute to meaningful environmental solutions. Graduates emerge with scientific expertise, professional capability and the confidence to influence environmental decision-making and sustainability outcomes across diverse sectors.
