COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master of Environmental Engineering is a two-to-three-year full-time degree that develops the expertise needed to design innovative and sustainable solutions to global environmental challenges. The duration of the program depends on prior study: students with an Environmental Engineering Systems major and the required mathematics and science subjects receive credit for foundation engineering subjects and commence in the second year, while those from non-engineering backgrounds complete foundation studies in their first year. In the second and third years, students specialise in environmental engineering principles and professional practice, focusing on critical areas such as climate change adaptation, water scarcity, renewable energy, pollution reduction, and bushfire risk management. Throughout the program, students undertake research, design, and industry-focused project work, gaining the technical and practical skills required to work as professional engineers. The curriculum is flexible and allows students to tailor their learning through specialisations aligned with career aspirations. Students can choose from Earth Observation, which focuses on remote sensing technologies for environmental monitoring and decision-making; Energy Systems, which explores renewable and low-carbon energy technologies and energy efficiency solutions; and Water Systems, which examines the design and management of sustainable water systems at local, national and global levels. Alternatively, students may elect not to specialise for broader capability. Industry engagement is embedded through opportunities such as the credited Internship subject, where students gain hands-on experience over 10–15 weeks with organisations involved in natural resource management, conservation, water and waste services, or environmental planning and consulting. Through the Creating Innovative Engineering subject, students collaborate with industry mentors to address real challenges, while the Infrastructure Engineering Research Project allows them to undertake research or industry-partnered work and present their findings at the Endeavour Engineering and IT Exhibition. By combining strong technical foundations, research experience and real-world application, the degree prepares graduates to lead sustainable environmental solutions that support resilient communities and ecosystems.
