The Master of Electrical Engineering is a two-to-three-year full-time degree that provides advanced training in the design, management, and development of modern electrical systems. The duration of study depends on previous academic background: students entering without an engineering qualification complete foundation engineering subjects in their first year, while students who have completed the Electrical Systems major in the Bachelor of Science at the University of Melbourne, along with the required mathematics and science subjects, receive credit for these foundation subjects and commence directly in the second year. Those with other science or engineering degrees may also be eligible for advanced standing. In the second and third years, students focus on building technical capability in areas such as electronics, control, signal processing, communications, and power systems, learning from experts working at the forefront of research in energy-efficient telecommunications, renewable power networks, and intelligent sensor systems. Throughout the program, students develop practical experience through industry placements, design challenges, and research projects that prepare them to practice as professional engineers. Students can tailor their learning to career goals by choosing from various specialisations including Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Systems, Business, Intelligent Networks and Communications, Electronics and Embedded Systems, and Low-Carbon Power Systems, or they may choose to complete the program without specialising for broader expertise. The program integrates applied engineering education with industry engagement opportunities such as the credited Internship subject, which allows students to gain professional experience over ten to fifteen weeks in sectors including automation, biotechnology, energy systems, oil and gas, consulting, and computing technologies. Through the Creating Innovative Engineering subject, students collaborate with industry mentors on real-world innovation projects, while the Engineering Capstone subject provides the opportunity to undertake research or participate in industry-partnered projects and present outcomes at the Endeavour Engineering and IT Exhibition. By combining theoretical learning, hands-on project work, and close industry alignment, the Master of Electrical Engineering prepares graduates for global careers at the forefront of technological innovation and sustainable engineering solutions.
