COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Development Studies program is offered in three pathways depending on a student’s prior experience and qualifications. The 200-point program, typically completed in two years full-time or part-time equivalent, is aimed at students who have completed undergraduate study and do not require prior professional experience. This pathway includes two compulsory subjects, four core subjects, and elective subjects totaling 125 points, with the option to complete a minor thesis instead of some electives. The 150-point program, completed in 1.5 years full-time or equivalent, is designed for graduates with at least one year of relevant professional experience and relevant background study. It consists of two compulsory subjects, two core subjects, and 100 points of electives or a minor thesis. The 100-point program, typically completed in one year full-time or equivalent, is intended for honours graduates or professionals with at least two years of relevant work experience, offering two compulsory subjects and electives totaling 75 points, alongside the option to complete a minor thesis. All pathways include the compulsory Development Research Design & Assessment subject (DEVT90041) and minor thesis options where relevant. A capstone requirement must be completed in the final portion of the program, with students choosing from three streams: Internship in Development, Development Studies Thesis, or Project Management and Design, each providing at least 25 points of advanced, integrative learning. The program is structured to provide a balance of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and research experience, ensuring graduates are well-prepared to address complex development challenges. Compulsory subjects such as Development Theories and Development Systems and Interventions introduce foundational concepts, while core and elective subjects allow students to specialise according to their interests and career goals. The program’s flexibility accommodates students at different stages of their academic or professional journey, combining rigorous coursework with applied learning opportunities to prepare students for impactful careers in development.
