COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Contemporary Chinese Studies (MCCS) at the University of Melbourne is a flexible, interdisciplinary program designed to provide advanced knowledge of contemporary China’s society, politics, economy, and culture. The program offers multiple study pathways tailored to students’ prior education and career goals, with options ranging from one to two years of full-time study, or equivalent part-time study.The standard 200-point program is designed for students who have completed an undergraduate degree in any discipline. Students undertake 50 points of foundation subjects during the first half of the program, which establish a solid understanding of contemporary Chinese studies. The program also includes 25 points of compulsory subjects, complemented by up to 100 points of elective subjects, allowing students to customise their learning according to personal and professional interests. In the final stage, students complete a capstone requirement of 25–50 points, which can take the form of a research project, internship, or industry-based project, offering practical experience and advanced research opportunities.The 150-point pathway is available for students who have completed an undergraduate degree in a cognate discipline. This option allows students to build on their prior studies with 25 points of compulsory subjects, 75–100 points of electives, and a capstone component to consolidate learning and demonstrate applied expertise.For students with a relevant honours degree, the 100-point program provides an accelerated pathway, including 25 points of compulsory subjects, 25–50 points of electives, and a minimum of 25 points of capstone subjects.All MCCS students must complete a capstone project, ensuring the integration of theoretical knowledge and practical skills. This could include a minor thesis, a research-based project, or an internship in a professional setting. The program structure is designed to balance foundational knowledge, specialist expertise, and practical experience, preparing graduates for careers in government, business, media, non-governmental organisations, or further doctoral research.
