COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Biostatistics is structured to provide both depth and flexibility, enabling students to develop advanced expertise in statistical methods for health and medical research. The degree offers two study options: Option 1 includes five core subjects, five elective subjects, and a two-unit (25-point) biostatistics research project; Option 2 includes five core subjects, five electives, the Capstone Selective POPH90123 Longitudinal and Correlated Data, and a 12.5-point research project. Students may choose to study full-time or part-time, with a blend of face-to-face and online delivery supporting a range of learning needs and professional commitments. The sample full-time course plan demonstrates a structured progression over 18 months, beginning in the first year with foundational core subjects such as Epidemiology 1, Introduction to Statistical Computing, Probability and Inference in Biostatistics, Foundations of Regression and Advanced Regression. In addition, students may select electives such as Health Indicators and Health Surveys, Design of Randomised Controlled Trials, and Clinical Biostatistics to expand specialised capabilities. The second year builds on this foundation with further elective options such as Health Economics 1, Longitudinal and Correlated Data, and Causal Inference, alongside the capstone Biostatistics Research Project, where students apply theoretical knowledge to a practical research problem under supervision. This research component consolidates analytical, computational and communication skills essential for professional practice or future academic research pathways. By combining rigorous core training with personalised elective choices and a practical capstone experience, the Master of Biostatistics equips graduates to address complex health data challenges with confidence and independence, providing strong preparation for roles in universities, hospitals, medical research institutes, government agencies, pharmaceutical organisations, and health policy environments, or for further study in doctoral-level research.
