COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Music at the University of Melbourne is a three-year, full-time degree designed to provide pre-professional music training. This 300-point program offers a well-rounded education in music, combining rigorous academic and practical components to prepare students for a variety of careers in music or further study.The structure of the course includes a compulsory Level 1 discovery subject, Musical Perspectives, which is worth 12.5 points and must be completed before progressing to any Level 2 core subjects. Students also complete 225 points within their chosen music major, forming the central focus of their degree. In addition, 50 points are allocated to breadth subjects, with at least one subject at Level 2 or 3, allowing students to explore disciplines outside of music and broaden their academic experience. The remaining 12.5 points can be used for either a music elective or an additional breadth subject, offering flexibility in shaping the degree to suit personal interests or career goals.Progression through the course is structured, with all Level 1 core subjects needing to be completed before students can enrol in Level 3 core subjects. Each core subject has specific prerequisites, ensuring that students build skills and knowledge in a logical and supportive sequence.Students choose one of six music majors when enrolling: Composition, Interactive Composition, Jazz and Improvisation, Musicology and Ethnomusicology, Music Studies, or Performance. Each major offers a unique focus, whether in creating new music, exploring diverse music traditions, developing performance skills, or preparing for research or teaching roles.
