COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Music is a three-year, full-time degree that provides pre-professional training for students pursuing a career in music. The program totals 300 credit points and is structured to include a balance of core music studies, a prescribed major, and breadth subjects. In the first year, students complete a 12.5 point compulsory discovery subject, Musical Perspectives, which must be completed before progressing to any Level 2 core subjects. Similarly, all Level 1 core subjects must be completed before enrolling in Level 3 core subjects, ensuring a logical progression through the degree.Students complete 225 points within a chosen music major, forming the core of their studies. The remaining points consist of 50 points of breadth subjects, which must include at least 12.5 points at Level 2 or 3, allowing students to explore areas outside of music and broaden their academic experience. An additional 12.5 points can be used as an elective or another breadth subject, providing flexibility to tailor the degree to individual interests. The program offers six majors: Composition, Interactive Composition, Jazz & Improvisation, Musicology & Ethnomusicology, Music Studies, and Performance. Each major focuses on different aspects of music practice and theory, giving students the opportunity to specialise in the area most aligned with their career goals. Whether students are interested in creating original compositions, exploring global music traditions, or developing performance expertise, the program provides rigorous training, expert mentorship, and practical experience.Overall, the Bachelor of Music equips students with strong technical, theoretical, and creative skills, preparing them for careers in music performance, composition, research, and education, or for further study at the postgraduate level.
